Balos Lagoon
Kissamos · Greece
The short version, from the cited sources
Balos is the lagoon at Crete's wild northwestern cape, where a tombolo of white and faintly pink sand ties the islet of Gramvousa's shadow to the mainland, enclosing sheets of warm, shin-deep water. Arrival is part of the experience: a rough track and footpath over the cape, or the seasonal ferry from Kissamos past the Venetian pirate fortress on Imeri Gramvousa. The area is protected under the Natura 2000 network and facilities are deliberately minimal.
