The short version, from the cited sources

Bournemouth has the great sandy beach of England's south coast: eleven kilometres of fine golden sand backed by wooded chines, sheltered by Poole Bay's orientation and warmed by one of Britain's sunniest microclimates. Its pier, cliff lifts and endless beach-hut lines carry a resort tradition dating to the Victorian invention of the seaside holiday, and on hot bank holidays it records some of the largest beach crowds in the country.
