Cape Hatteras lighthouse rising beyond dune grass on North Carolina's Outer Banks

Cape Hatteras Beaches

Buxton · United States

The short version, from the cited sources

The beaches at Cape Hatteras sit at the elbow of North Carolina's Outer Banks, thin barrier islands standing far out in the Atlantic where the Gulf Stream passes close offshore. Wave energy focused by Diamond Shoals gives the East Coast some of its most consistent surf, while the same waters earned the name Graveyard of the Atlantic for centuries of wrecks. The spiral-striped Hatteras lighthouse, moved inland in 1999 to escape erosion, watches over the national seashore.
