North America · Illustrated record
Daytona Beach
Daytona Beach · United States
The short version, from the cited sources
Daytona Beach's hard-packed quartz sand is firm enough to drive on, and that accident of geology created American motorsport: land-speed records were set on this strand from 1903 and beach racing here led directly to NASCAR's founding. Cars are still permitted on designated sections at low tide, a rarity among major beaches. The wide, flat shore and long pier anchor a classic, unpretentious boardwalk resort town.
