Hanauma Bay
Honolulu · United States
The short version, from the cited sources
Hanauma Bay is a flooded volcanic crater on Oahu's southeast corner whose sheltered reef flats made it the most visited snorkelling site in Hawaii. Decades of overuse led to its designation as a nature preserve with managed daily capacity, an entry reservation system, a mandatory orientation and closure days each week to rest the reef. The result is a managed encounter with living coral and reef fish rather than an open beach, and the marine life protections are strict.
