The short version, from the cited sources

Magens Bay cuts almost a mile into the north side of Saint Thomas, its long heart-shaped pocket so well sheltered that the water often lies nearly flat, an unusual state for an Atlantic-facing island. The palm-backed beach and its arboretum-like grove were donated to the public as a protected park in 1946, and the overlook on the road above provides one of the most reproduced views in the Caribbean.
