Marina Beach runs thirteen kilometres along Chennai's front, among the longest urban beaches in the world and the evening living room of a city of millions: kite-flyers, sundal vendors, horse rides and families by the tens of thousands on the wide sand. Statues and memorials of Tamil cultural figures line the drive behind it. The Bay of Bengal's undertow makes swimming prohibited; the Marina's purpose is the promenade, not the water.
