South America · Illustrated record
Playa Brava
Punta del Este · Uruguay
The short version, from the cited sources
Playa Brava, the rough side of Punta del Este, faces the open Atlantic with the sculpture La Mano, five giant concrete fingers rising from the sand since 1982, as South America's most photographed beach landmark. The resort alternates by design between this surf-swept shore and the calm Playa Mansa on the estuary side of the peninsula. Brava is where the ocean's energy and the town's art-resort identity meet.
