South America · Illustrated record
Praia de Lopes Mendes
Angra dos Reis · Brazil
The short version, from the cited sources
Lopes Mendes runs almost three kilometres along the ocean side of Ilha Grande, the car-free forested island south of Rio de Janeiro. Its fine, squeaking white sand and reliable small beach break are reached only by boat to a neighbouring cove followed by a rainforest trail, since no road crosses the island. The absence of buildings on the sand is a consequence of the island's protected status and unusual penal-colony history.
