Praia do Norte (Nazare)
Nazare · Portugal
The short version, from the cited sources
Praia do Norte at Nazare produces the biggest waves ever surfed: an undersea canyon five kilometres deep aims Atlantic winter swell directly at the headland, and world records above twenty-six metres have been set here since Garrett McNamara's 2011 ride revealed the break. The red lighthouse fort on the promontory has become surfing's most famous grandstand. Outside big-wave season it is a broad, wild, largely empty golden beach where swimming is generally unsafe.
