San Fruttuoso
Camogli · Italy
The short version, from the cited sources
San Fruttuoso is a pebble cove on the Portofino promontory occupied almost entirely by a tenth-century Benedictine abbey, reachable only by boat or mountain path, with no road of any kind. Offshore, eighteen metres down, stands the bronze Christ of the Abyss, placed in 1954 and now a dive-site icon protected within the Portofino marine reserve. The compression of abbey, beach, forest and protected sea into one roadless cove makes it unique in the Mediterranean.
