Mondello is Palermo's beach, a curve of white sand and shallow aquamarine water between the rock massifs of Monte Gallo and Monte Pellegrino, ten minutes from the Sicilian capital's centre. Its Liberty-style bathing pavilion on stilts, built in the early 1900s when the marsh was drained, remains the emblem of a beach culture where the city decamps entire summer days. The water's colour owes to the flat, sandy bay bottom.
