The short version, from the cited sources

Spiaggia Grande at Positano is less a beach than the floor of an amphitheatre: the Amalfi Coast town's stacked pastel houses and the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta rise directly from the dark pebble-and-sand shore. Ferries and lidos share the strand, and the light on the vertical town has made this one of the most photographed coastal scenes in the world. The beach itself is functional; the setting is the monument.
