North America · Illustrated record
Waikiki Beach
Honolulu · United States
The short version, from the cited sources
Waikiki is the historic heart of modern surfing and Hawaii's most famous shore: a chain of connected beach sections fronting Honolulu's hotel district on Oahu's south coast, with Diamond Head crater closing the view to the east. Long, gentle waves breaking over offshore reefs made this the teaching ground of Duke Kahanamoku and the beach-boy tradition, and outrigger canoes and longboards still share the same water. Much of the sand is actively managed and periodically replenished, part of the beach's long engineered history.
