North America · Illustrated record
Waimea Bay
Haleiwa · United States
The short version, from the cited sources
Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore effectively created big-wave surfing: winter swells here produce faces measured in tens of feet, and the invitation-only Eddie Aikau contest runs only in the rare years the bay reaches its enormous minimum size. In summer the same water can fall almost flat, turning the deep-sand crescent into a swimming beach. The seasonal transformation between the two states is among the most extreme of any famous beach.
